Labello: Fruity Shine "Dragon Fruit" Review

If you've never experienced the taste of a real dragon fruit, let me tell you that you are missing out. Dragon fruits are grown in a variety of asian countries and come in many types. Dragon fruit it a cactus fruit (Pitaya or Pitahaya) and usually has magenta and green outsides and appear to be spiky. The insides can be white and translucent with hundreds of black seeds or deep magenta coloured! They taste VERY similar to kiwi fruit, only they aren't as strong. Dragon fruit goes well with watermelon, kiwi, coconut and even açaí! This super fruit can be found in a variety of asian markets around the world! Especially during June - late December. So if you ever come across this fruit, don't be afraid to try it!

As for products about this amazing fruit, one that caught my eye is Labello's fruity shine lip balm in "dragon fruit." Seeing it, I had to buy it. It was super exciting. The package design is absolute gorgeous too!

The Fruity Shine line, is one of the most internationally popular versions of Labello's lip balms. There are a huge variety of flavours from Strawberry, Cherry, Pink Guava, Pomegranate, (and the most recently added) Peach and even Watermelon! Each of the colours on the tube indicates the tint of the balm on the inside, they all have similar design (slightly altered per fruit) and are all shimmery!

Unfortunately dragon fruit, is a retired flavour. It used to be on the "Star fruits" line under a different package design but dragon fruit isn't made anymore. Some eBay and Amazon sellers still sell this product but it may very well be expired.

Labello isn't sold in every country. In Europe, Labello Lip care is readily available. In the U.S., Labello is known as Nivea Lip care. Japan and China, also use the brand under Nivea. Labello and Nivea, are basically the same thing! Labello is all about lip balms while Nivea is about lip balms AND soaps, shampoos, deodorant etc.

MY REVIEW ON:
LABELLO FRUITY SHINE "DRAGON FRUIT"

I absolutely love this lip balm! Not only does it smell good, it's sparkly! The smell is not at all obnoxious and the outer packaging design is very beautiful and pleasing to the eye. The tube is also interesting with the dragon tribal design on it. The only downside to this lip balm is that if it gets too warm it starts melting and can make the sides on the inside of the tube messy. But, if you keep the lip balm in a cool temperature it should be fine! I was very satisfied with this and It's now my favourite lip balm.

PROS-
  • Light, sheer, magenta tint.
  • Attractive package and tube design.
  • Nice shimmer
  • Decent amount of product.
  • The part of the tube that turns has a light shimmer to it
  • Very smooth, almost like butter.
  • Smells very yummy and isn't obnoxious
  • After using this lip balm, my lips have improved in softness. (I never really have chapped lips though)

Tribal dragon design on lip balm tube cap

CONS-
  • Has been discontinued (therefore, it can be pricey or hard to find)
  • Doesn't smell like dragon fruit (more like watermelon)
  • Can be a bit messy when very warm
  • When almost finished using the lip balm, the shimmer seems to excessively collect near the bottom. (the only gritty place in the whole tube)

Gritty shimmer at the bottom of lip balm tube after almost 1 year of frequent usage.

OVERALL APPEAL (out of possible 10): 8.5/10

Because this particular lip balm is no longer manufactured, I have yet to find a decent replacement. Labello's recent release of a Watermelon fruity shine flavour gets me curious as to whether or not it's this EXACT lip balm. Fruity Shine Dragon fruit, smells exactly like watermelon. I have yet to purchase and try the new Watermelon flavour but I'm sure it will be a decent replacement.
Check out the packaging design and colours:

So if you're interested in this dragon fruit lip balm, a good replacement MAY just be the watermelon Labello! Also here are some more lip products that are dragon fruit inspired:
